Chapter 8

Clay had always loved the snow. He loved the way it fell from the skies, soft and powdery, landing on the earth to cover it with white crystal perfection. It brought back memories of his childhood, when he and Tate had built snowmen, using remnants of old clothing found in the recycling bags to dress them. A scarf here, an old tweed cap there and their masterpiece had been completed.

Clay’s favourite memory of them together in the snow had been when he’d been around seventeen, not long before he’d signed up for the army. Tate had been fourteen then, all gangly limbs and deep hazel eyes and Clay remembered wanting to kiss him so badly, it had become a craving he’d had to physically suppress. His growing sexual attraction to Tate, all five foot eight of him, his sharp tongue, his quick wit, and his wide smile was Clay’s Kryptonite.

They’d been laughing and snowballing each other, both soaked with snow crystals and Tate had run after Clay, pushing him down into the snow and straddling him, while trying to stuff a snowball into his jeans. The feel of Tate’s hands on him, the closeness of his body, the way Tate’s hands had found Clay’s skin, his fingers frozen but warming Clay as if a furnace had been lit inside him.

Clay had wrested control from Tate, rolling them both over again and clambering off Tate so quickly Clay thought he’d pulled a muscle. That would have been preferable to Tate feeling what lay beneath Clay’s jeans: a boner so hard and needy that had Tate felt or seen it, Clay would have been mortified.

They’d stopped the snowball fight then, Clay choosing instead to challenge Tate to make a snow angel and see who could make the best one.

Now, he smiled as he looked outside the window at the garden, seeing the soft flakes settle, obliterating the green grass and nodding pansies under a thin blanket of white.

“Here you go. One hot chocolate with marshmallows.” Tate handed Clay a steaming mug. The scent of warm gooey goodness coupled with the fragrant cocoa tantalised Clay’s nostrils. He inhaled, and heaved a satisfied sigh, “Ahh, thanks, babe. Did you bring the shortbread biccies too?”

Tate snorted and tossed a half-eaten packet of biscuits onto the lounge table. He quirked an eyebrow at Clay. “More than my life’s worth to forget your shortbread. Knock yourself out.” He chuckled as Archie got out of his basket by the fireplace and trotted over. The pup loved sweet stuff and biscuits were one of his favourites. Keeping his eyes on the biscuits, then offering a soulful gaze at Tate, Archie snuggled in under Clay’s feet, his little tongue hanging out in a doggy smile.

Clay reached down and scratched Archie between his ears, as the pup rolled over, offering his belly. “You are such a tart,” Clay murmured as he rubbed fingers along the furry little belly. “Look at you as if butter wouldn’t melt in your mouth.”

On the couch, Tate cradled his drink, long legs stretched out in front of him.
